ASTRO BUGS: Game Design
Designing a game that will teach people about Design Thinking.
Group Project: Alexandra Anghel, Darya Meszkes and Marion Bouccara
The challenge: to design a game using one of the many Design Thinking methodologies, and make it so that it teaches others something about Design Thinking.
A complex project that incorporated a whole range of processes:
-game mechanics
-theme
-aesthetics
-copywriting
-packaging

We picked IDEO's design thinking methodology in order to guide us through the design process.
Concept development and prototyping
The development phase meant a lot of research, idea generation, prototyping, and play-testing.
IDEA cards
For the theme of the game, we started by looking at workspaces as ecosystems and ended up interpreting that in a theme that would be children-friendly and just crazy enough to be fun: the bugs in The Idea Forest are trying to get into space, and you need to help them collect all the necessary components for their rocket launch.
ACTION tiles
Instead of a traditional board, we decided to use a set of tiles for our game design. Players would need to move around the board and activate different tiles in order to progress in the game. This illustrates to need to go between the Design Thinking phases in order to work towards a better design outcome. The tiles also represent the different Design Thinking phases, and a brief definition of each of them can be found on the back of each tile.
To make the game more interesting, we also created CHARACTER cards, which would give the players different advantages during the game (more mobility, extra DATA coins, etc.).
Development for the THE RESEARCHER character card.
